Ever wanted to learn to play the piano like a pro? Becky Whitney (from Hurricane area) wants to come to campus and teach an Instant Piano workshop, as well as a Play by Ear workshop. Then, we'll be able to schedule Becky to come to campus and turn us all into expert pianists in no time (with a little practice, of course).

The ladies performed a scene from Steel Magnolias (directed by Artie Hammon) with Vy Barlow (Clairee Belcher), Helena Darger (Truvy Jones), Mary Timpson (Shelby Eatenton Latcherie), Sandy Naylor (M'Lynn Eatenton), and Raine Berg (Annelle Dupuy Desoto). The guys did a scene from I Hate Hamlet with Richard Barlow (John Barrymore), Jesse Barlow (Gary Peter Lefkowitz) and Alex Ivory (Andrew Rally). Very entertaining!

Richard Barlow had two pieces displayed (pictured here) and also tells me he is planning on taking the Figure Drawing course Kathy is offering this summer. Students taking this course will have the advantage of being poised to launch into the new art degree program Kathy is working with administration on setting up for next academic year. SAC is hosting an easter egg hunt on campus this Saturday from 10-1 AZ time (11-2 UT time). The preschoolers' hunt is at 10, ages 4-6 hunt at 10:30 and ages 7-10 at 11. Lunch - hot dogs, chips, lemonade- will be served at 11:30. Bring the kiddies to forage for loot and then sit on the front lawn or in the plaza to munch on your free lunch. Foundation Donor Appreciation Luncheon

The MCC Foundation Donor Appreciation Luncheion was held yesterday at Merry Wives. Stephanie, Sophie, Monica and Robert all turned out for the event. Dr. Klaas and Dr. Cawley were there as well as Carolyn and Ariel. The scholarship reciepients had a chance to meet and thank the people who made extra financial support for their academic dreams a reality. It was a good time (great decor as you can see lol) and a fun visit.

Iron Man Kris does it again!

Our own Kris Hansen has done the seemingly impossible - again. Last weekend he ran a 100-mile marathon on Antelope Island in the Great Salt Lake. Runners were given 30 hours to complete the marathon and ran straight through the day and night. Kris said he finished in 27 hours. Not quite the same challenge as the Iron Man race he competed in last year, but definitely not shabby. He also said the scenery was beautiful, especially the panorama of the city lights from neighboring Bountiful and Ogden (that's a pretty good stretch). Wow, wait a view... Way to go, Kris. Congrats on another successful marathon!

If you're wondering about course requirements, scholarships or anything at all, these reps can help you. NAU, SUU, Chamberlain College of Nursing, Colorado Technical University, Grand Canyon University and University of Maryland University College are sending reps to talk with you. Other institutions have sent printed materials you can pick up at the same time. Don't miss out on this opportunity.
Meeting a person who's experienced the campus and the school culture is invaluable in forming a clear perception of what it will be like to attend the school. Seniors Hit Campus!

Yesterday was Senior Day. Local high school seniors came to MCC (see Academic Chair John Cawley hanging with the students) to learn about MCC programs and college in general. Director Of Student Services Brandon Boulter also shared gems with them regarding financial aid and how to choose the right college to fit their goals. As an added bonus, the students got free lunch - pizza, chips and pop. I always like seeing the students on campus as their exploring the next step in their lives. Seemed like they had a good time and appreciated the information they were able to glean from our presentations.

However, that is not true. The writer becomes involved in murder, graft, and romance at Baldpate Inn. Meanwhile, will he ever finish his novel in 24 hours?

Dean Goes Back to 2nd grade

NMC Dean Carolyn Hamblin went to visit Masada Charter School's 2nd graders in class this week. (See her pictured with the students.) She participated in a letter exchange project with the students to help them learn about letter writing. She held a question answer period during her visit for the students to inquire about college. The students letters she picked up can be seen posted around campus. Be sure to take a minute to scan some if you're on campus - they're adorable!

SAC elections will be held 10/19 and 10/20. Results will be posted 10/21.
The Student Activities Council (SAC) is designed to promote college spirit, provide a focal point for discussions between students and college staff and give students a representative voice in college affairs.
Through SAC, students can participate in the democratic process. SAC serves as a collective voice for students in student-related issues and concerns. Elected student leaders seek to promote progressive cultural and social environment.
The SAC elected officers serve as the executive and the legislative body representing the students at their home campus. The four elective Student Activities Council Officers are President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer.

John Cawley conducted a blind taste test today to settle a little dispute among staff. The test compared local coffee retailers Espresso Creek and Big Dan's. Here John waits while Lorie Wyler weighs the options. Tasters compared hot chocolate, lattes and fraps from both establishments. Big Dan's came out ahead in all but the frap category. Some of the staff were surprised by their own prefrences. Thanks, John, for helping to clear that one up!

Kid's Shakespeare

Our own MCC kid's drama class treated us to a performance compiled of pieces from multiple playwrights - the works of Shakespeare among them (see picture). It was quite astonishing to have the Bard's poetic lines dropping from the mouth's of babes. The kids did a great job. Kudos to instructors Artemisia Hammon and Ruth Crawford.

Sweet Music for Summertime

The Music Appreciation class organized a performance as their final for the summer semester. (How awesome are they!?) These students really went above and beyond. The classmates played pieces they wrote during the course, as well as some popular numbers such as Ashokan Farewell by Jay Ungar and Sweet Is the Work by John J. McClellan. The ensemble included piano, keyboard, violin, viola, flute, guitar and other instruments students practiced during the class. Their instructor Marilyn Cox performed with them. She was proud of her students and glad to have the chance to play with them. She said she thought they were a talented bunch. I think this class has set a new, higher bar for students following them!

Our CFK wrapped up this week. I always love to peek in and get some pix of the awesome projects the kids get going. Here Brandie Wero (R) and India Bulletts constructed a "roller coaster" using pipe insulation, marbles and other misc materials. They've been studying centripetal force and gravity in Marilyn Cox's "Science or Fiction" course. Looking forward to the fun next year will bring!

College for Kids started this week. I caught world travelers Kathryn Timpson, Morley Williams, and Brianna Williams in Around the World studying exotic nations. I always love to see the kids on campus in the summer (though it can get a bit hectic) having fun and learning new things. The classes run for four weeks this summer with some old favorites and some new courses thrown in to the mix. Marilyn Cox is teaching Science or Fiction Keith Pipkin is instructing kids on Movie Maker, while Mary Horsley is visiting her Cooking Corner with students again this year. Hopefully fun will be had by all!

Farewell, Susan

Friends gathered on campus yesterday for lunch to bid farewell to Susan Hammon, our esteemed Campus Dean. Susan has been an effective leader and is well-liked by her staff. She will be missed, indeed. Susan said she, too, will miss her friends at MCC. We had a great time reminiscing about old times. Don Timpson, former NMC leader, shared some humorous tidbits about the history of the campus. It was interesting to pause and reflect on all the changes brought about in large part through Susan's efforts on behalf of NMC and the surrounding community. I personally have enjoyed Susan as a supervisor and mentor and watch her go with a rather heavy heart. I wish her the best in her new endeavours and hope she will find joy in them and be challenged to expand her capacity even more. Susan officially leaves us on June 30th. (After which, she will take off for Peru - this girl doesn't waste a moment! ;) LOL)

Wednedsday, May. 26th, the North Chapter of the MCC Foundation held its annual members event. We enjoyed a delicious pasta bar with scrumptious tiramisu for dessert. (See chef Michael Cawely serving Lorie Wyler her hot-from-the-pan chicken alfredo.) The board members were elected and Robert Knudson announced as the latest Mohave Serves recipient.

Well, it's over. The semester is gone. Finals week mercifully ended, the commencement walk concluded and the pinning complete. (See President Kearns get a big hug from SGA Pres Chris Cox as he awarded her a bronze medal for being an All-USA Bronze Scholar at the pinning.) Chris now has her bachelor's paid for and says she's going to attend NAU online. Awesome! I'm excited for her and all the graduates embarking on their next journey.
I could tell after the pinning the nuring grads were relieved. I remember feeling that way after I got my associate's degree. I wish all the graduates the best.

Well, the academic year is coming to a close. Another year come and gone. Its been a good year for me. We've had some fun new events, and I've learned new things (like starting this blog). Finals week is upon us and the campus is a buzz with students preparing for their tests and presentations. Some will be heading South to the commencement exercises in Lake Havasu on Friday. The nursing graduates will be pinned on Saturday at 7 in the El Capitan Auditorium. They've all worked hard and hopefully had a little fun. (I know the nursing students squeeze in a bit of fun by their smiles, see Lacey Breinholt and Jacquelyn Christensen.) Next, the hubbub will die down, and we'll sail into summer...

Sandra La Corti and Anne Blackmore kickback on a break from studying for their finals to enjoy some chips and salsa during the college's premeier Cinco de Mayo celebration. Sandra and Anne were the first students to show up for the fiesta and said they'd been waiting for it to start all day. Thanks to Mary for putting together some rockin' CDs for our party and making sure we had the patio furniture purchased through SGA fundraising in time. The plaza looks even better!(Big thanks to Roger for setting it up.) The wind tried to put a damper on the fun, but we just moved the food to the Student Lounge in the 400 building, adjacent to the plaza. Let's hope we can make this celebration a tradition. :)

Hey look! It's Libbey Steed and her mom, Leslie Venuti, all smiles at the Student Recogniton Luncheon on Tuesday. Teresa K. Cawely gave Libby an award for her efforts in math. It was awesome to see all the students being awarded. Especially stellar were Chris Cox (SGA Pres), BillyLeBaron, and Sandra LaCorti.

Hopefully, everyone has stopped by to see the student art show that started Tuesday (as part of MCC Discovery), as well. There's lots going on as the semester winds down; Be sure to pay attention so you don't miss anything. Like Once Upon a Mattress starting tonight :) C ya around.

It's time for the MCC Spring Muscial! This year it's Once Upon a Mattress. Once Upon a Mattress delighted audiences on Broadway and is sure to tickle your funny bone. The performance runs Apr. 28-30 at the El Capitan School auditorium in Colorado City, 255 N Cottonwood St, beginning at 7:30 p.m. each evening.
If you thought you knew the story of "The Princess and The Pea," you may be in for a walloping surprise! Carried on a wave of wonderful songs, by turns hilarious and raucous, romantic and melodic, this rollicking spin on the familiar classic of royal courtship and comeuppance provides for some side-splitting shenanigans. Chances are you'll never look at fairy tales quite the same way again.
Doug Bishop co-directs the production with musical director Dr. Ken Peterson, who is also a professor at Dixie State College. Cast members include Max Horsley as the Minstrel, Elizabeth Timpson as Lady Larken, Artemisia Hammon as Queen Aggravain, David Timpson as Prince Dauntless, Ianthus Hammon as King Sextimus and Lucas Hammon as Sir Harry. Donor Luncheon

We were pleased to have Dr. Klaas visit the North Campus this week. Tuesday morning he attended our Foundation meeting and later the Foundation Donor Luncheon held at Merry Wives Cafe. I was fortunate to be able to attend this year (shooting pix!). I think this is a great event. It's good for the scholarship recipients to have a chance to meet the people that help make the funds available to them to advance their education. I got to visit with Sandra La Corti (that's her between Carolyn and Dr. Klaas with Karin McEwan), who is graduating this year, about her future plans. I always like to touch base with students, esp since I am still a student myself. It's neat to hear about their plans. Sandra is planning to transfer to SUU and may move to Cedar City.

1st place winner Leslie Hammon (in the yellow) embraces 2nd place winner Vincent Bradshaw after they crossed the finish line this morning at the first MCC 5K Run/Walk organized by SGA. It was down right freezy but that didn't put a damper on the runners. SGA Pres Chris Cox started the 5K at 7 on-the-dot at the MCC Studio. It was fun to see the community participation. Young and old turned out for the event; There 73 registrants. Especially fun was seeing the kids sporting their MCC 5K t-shirts. 2 prizes were awarded to the 1st and 2nd place youth. Grand prize winner (raised the most $) was Laura Ross (Chris's very own sis), who brought in $700 alone. 3rd place went to Hyrum Williams. Way to go, girl! Looks like SGA will be getting students that outdoor dining furniture, so they can thoroughly enjoy eating out on the plaza between classes. This initial event was a success and the hope is to establish it. SGA is planning a 5K Run/Walk for Apr 3rd. (See Leslie striking his runner's pose in front of the MCC Studio - he says he's psyched up for this.) You can register now on campus or before the event at 6:00 a.m. The official start time is 7:00 a.m. The registration fee is $10 for individuals and $35 for families, and the first 50 registrants will receive a T-shirt. The route begins at the MCC Studio in Centennial Park and continues through Centennial. Community members are donating healthy baked goods to sell following the race. Prizes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners, as well as a grand prize to the participant bringing in the most pledge dollars. I caught Hannah Hammon and David Timpson while they were visiting campus from the Academy for Senior Day today. They were especially gracious, as they were about to bite into their delicious Craigo's pizza. Senior Day is always a fun day to be on campus. I like to see the students and feel their energy. I think they enjoyed lunch and got lots of good info from Don, Kris, and Carolyn. Hopefully, we'll see them all on campus for Fall semester as MCC students. ;)

Our very own Mrs. Carolyn Hamblin is presenting a paper on advsing and cultural competence at the The National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) Rocky Mountain Region 10 this week. I am in awe. This month I was fortunate to get to know one of our instructors, Ernie Baca, a bit better because I'm putting together a profile on him. I'd never actually met Ernie before, I only knew he taught Martial Arts. (That's him helping Virginia Dockstader with her self-defense moves.) Wow! I had no idea he was so dynamic. He's not only a top Martial Arts instructor, he's a professional photographer, father, grandfather, twin brother, and even finds time for his day job at UDOT. He's planning a photography class (I'm eyeing that one) and his next set of Martial Arts classes start Mar. 24. You may want to check this one out!

MCC Students Judge Fredonia Science Fair

Nursing student Jesse Allen took GED instructor Marilyn Cox up on the offer to serve as a judge at the Fredonia K-12 Science Fair on Feb. 18. Marilyn helped organize and judge the fair. Jesse said she was impressed with the students projects and enjoyed the opportunity. I like that they included the whole school and gave the younger students a chance to interact with the older kids.

Now that everyone is registered and settled in, we've got some more deadlines to devote our attention to. The first reminder is of the date for graduation apps - March 1st. If you want to graduate this spring or summer and attend commencement, give Carolyn your application as soon as you can. Also, if your continuing next fall, the financial aid deadline is March 15th. Get your taxes done and your FAFSA filed!
Another exciting event coming up is transfer week. The last week of February, a rep from Dixie College will be on campus M-Th to answer questions, and a rep from SUU will be on campus, as well. Drop by and see them and get information about transferring to these institutions to continue your college ed.

NMC was proud to welcome President Kearns to our campus and host a face-to-face Chat with the President on Tuesday. The room was packed with students and everyone seemed to enjoy their chat over coffee and blueberry coffee cake. Thanks to Dr. Kearns for making the trip and all the students that turned out to meet him. I think this is a unique and awesome forum for students and administrators alike. Spring is coming! It's time to sing... in the latest MCC Spring production, that is. Director Doug Bishop and musical director Ken Peterson are teaming up on this, and you won't want to be left out. (I'm really looking forward to watching this one since it's based on one of my favorite fairytales, The Princess and the Pea.) Busy, Busy!

In-person registration has resumed and the students are flooding in to get signed up. (See Kim N. helping new student Leslie Hunt with her registration papers.) Boxes of books are stacked around the bookstore. It's a new semester! We're gearing up for the first week of classes. The resident faculty is back on campus - it's great to see them again. Tonight is faculty orientation for resident and adjunct. (The caterers are scurrying around - looks to be a yummy dinner for the meeting.) Everyone has tons to do and there's a kind of buzz in the air of our busyness. It's back to business. ;)

The holidays were great. MCC Shines turned out fabulous and then we were pounded with snow. Now, it's back to work. This week we're preparing for resident faculty to return to campus and getting the ball rolling for Spring semester to begin. Down come the lights... I'm back in classes myself and trying to get used to having homework again. lol

Classes begin 1/25, so if you haven't registered better get to it!

Finals Week is underway, and I can tell students are stressed! Fortunately, MCC Shines is tonight and, hopefully, they'll have a chance to catch some holiday cheer. Also, Play On! opens this week and can offer comic relief, as well.
Our next anticipated production is the Holiday Choir Concert Dec. 10th and 11th. It is in the Centennial Park at the Academy Auditorium. Admission is free, and the performance begins at 7:30. Don't miss out!

MCC Shines

We're all hustle and bustle preparing for MCC Shines. String after string of holiday lights, it's as if they never end. Our tree is up and the outdoor lighting is nearly complete. (phew.)

Our campus will begin the holiday glow Dec. 1 at 6:30 p.m. Stop by for hot chocolate, cookies, and holiday cheer - including a visit with Santa! This year's lighting ceremony features local musical performers from the community and surrounding (Kanab and El Capitan) schools. Also, the 3rd graders from El Capitan and Masada Charter School are creating luminarias to contribute to the shiny holiday atmosphere at the event.

I love that the college does this every year because it's the only major spot for holiday lights around town. I'm looking forward to it and hope to see you all there.

string of events

It seems there's no time like Fall semester for events. With all the holidays, MCC has events one right after the other. Yet, we still manage to squeeze things like classes and registration around our reveling. All the activity translates to tons of fun for the season, and the planning and preperation are taking off now. I, for one, am getting excited!

The slew of events begins the end of this month with Halloween festivities. Look for us next Friday, 10/23, at the El Capitan School October Fest and snag a treat. Susie the Witch will show you how to throw down the broomstick and sweep you up in a fun frenzy with her spookish song. Then the following week brings free fall fare (popcorn, candy, cookies, cider, etc.) for all on campus, crowned by the Masada Charter School trunk-or-treat on Saturday, 10/31. We'll have a terrificly terrifying trunk with goulish goodies for the costumed kiddies. Be sure to stop in at the college and Masada for both. We've got the treats covered, so it's up to you to have a trick up your sleeve (or under your witch or warlock hat).

Well, the Oktoberfest was fun. We had some of the county government officials visit with us, and I think they enjoyed the event. An enormous thank you to Sam Zitting and his family for providing the venue and all the extra effort they put in to make the event a hit.

The Chicken Dance was a crowd pleaser, as always, as was the German sing along led by our Foundation Chapter President, Dr. Claude T. Cawley. One of our choir classes performed, as well, and the group sounded fantastic. It was freezy, though. Burrrrr!

Now that the weather seems to have officially turned autumn, I'm getting ready to break out the fall decorations and deck out the campus. I'm inspired by the lovely colors peeping through the green all around me - gold and red leaves are falling all around. I've already decorated my home, so now the itch is full boar.

Well, the Centennial Park Fair was a blast. We gave away tons of freebies - MCC was all over the fair. The fair goers loved the games - Knock 'em Down and In the Cup - at our booth.

This week we're gearing up for the Foundation's Oktoberfest, Fri - Oct. 2. The Oktoberfest is always sure to be a good time. They'll be German fare, German drink, and German music. I can't wait to do the Chicken Dance with our Chicken Dancing Elmo doll! Hope to see you there :)

Well, our 2009-2010 academic year is off to a booming start. Enrollment is soaring, and I'm loving all the energy buzzing around campus with all the newcomers and returned MCC community members. Our Fall semester is underway and going fabulously well. We've made it through Add/Drop. Everyone is settled into classes, the nursing students and faculty are enjoying the new lab, and the GED department has a big new dedicated space for class and studying.

Also, our fountain is running again, and I'm enjoying it immensely. The turn of the season is unfolding, and I'm enjoying being on such a gorgeous campus while it happens. Autumn is my favorite time of year and the hint of crispness in the air is tantalizing my senses.

I'm looking forward to our next set of projects. We'll see the revelers at the Centennial Park Fair - definitely look for us at the rodeo. Also, the Foundation Oktoberfest 2009 planning is underway. Look for your opportunity to get tickets shortly! More to come. Be good - cc
